The Swedish theme complements Vytautas Kasiulis’ creative legacy, where relatively little attention has been given to landscapes. The architecture of small, quaint Scandinavian towns, fishing nets drying in the sun, a boat pulled up onto a lakeshore after a fishing trip – all these images were what caught the painter’s eye when he travelled around Sweden, having been invited by his friend Sture Anderson to spend summer there with his family. On the way, Vytautas Kasiulis painted a great number of these attractive landscape motifs: wind mills, churches and historical architectural monuments that appealed for their resounding colours and convivial mood.
