Sweet orange

Valley of the Temples

Valley of the Temples
Agrigento, Italy

Introduced to Sicily as late as the sixteenth century, it spread rapidly in private gardens and then in specialized groves. There are sweet and sour varieties, and the colors also vary, from red (blood oranges) to yellow-orange. Many of these varieties are present in the Kolymbethra Garden. In Sicily, citrus groves, prized for both their utility and their beauty, are known as “gardens”.
