It is regarded as the sword guard created by Shigemitsu (1667-1744), the 2nd head of the Hayashi school, based on the style of the work,.
He was good at making open work sword guards following the style of Matashichi, the founder of the Hayashi school.
This irregular-shaped iron piece has an open work design of plum tree. It depicts lively branches, buds and blossoms.
It is said that Shigemitsu’s skill couldn’t reach the founder’s, which created many refined works. However, this piece shows his workmanship that is reminiscent of the founder’s own.
