Sword Pommel

National Museums Liverpool

United Kingdom

Silver-gilt sword pommel, still attached to the top of the iron tang and the base plate of the upper guard.
The pommel is rather high with indented curved ends. Parcel gilt. The broad front and the back faces are plain silver, but chased, with tooled and gilded grooves along the lower edge. There are gilded vertical grooves near the ends. The top is corroded and there is no decoration visible. The narrow ends are gilded, but the raised tongue is plain silver with nielloed triangles and runic symbols: single row triangles around edges, double row at base. At one end of the pommel there were 3 rivets in special seatings, at the other only two with a space between for a now missing ring-attachment. There is a slight marking on runic symbol where the ring has rubbed. The upper plate of guard is missing, and the pommel can be seen hollow. The lower plate is of a dish type, with 3 rivet-holes, large at the ends and two smaller ones where the rivets held the two plates and the pommel together. The pommel is corroded badly, but not have much sign of wear. It was found in a sandpit on Mr Bushell's property in Guilton in 1875.
