The Valentine

The Valentine
Richmond, United States

What type of military sword is this?  The weapon appears to be a small light-weight version of the United States Army Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword.

Many Richmonders readily re-embraced the city’s Confederate history during the American Civil War centennial commemorations of the 1960’s, which may have been a deciding
factor in the donation of this well-preserved example of militaria. The sword illustrates how many of the Confederate officers had previously served in the United States military and adapted their training to their new government.  The name and the fate of the foot officer who carried this sword during the early 1860’s are unknown to us today.
