Sylvia, Seamstress of New Bern

This tintype shows Sylvia Conner, a successful African American seamstress who worked and lived in New Bern during the Union occupation. It was requested by Union soldier Private Henry Clapp who wrote home about Sylvia and her sister-in-law Mary Jane.
