About the nature of the music underlying this ballet Stravinsky said: “It may be that echoes of time have left their mark on the creation of this symphony: all shocking and changing events, despair and contempt, all continuing harassment and stress, and finally resignation and relief. However, it is not for me to judge.”

Hans van Manen was especially struck by the fierce aggressiveness of this composition, which enabled him to create a dramatic choreography in which the randomness of choice in partnership, and the consequences of behavior be placed in a compassionate light .
