Seder plate

Mid-19th century

Budapest, Hungary

At the opening of the Jewish Museum, the founders defined the topics and objects they wanted to exhibit. They saw the products of the porcelain factory in Herend as symbols of Hungarian trade. In the center of the plate we can see a family celebrating Seder, but the picture is not based on Haggadah illustrations, as usual, but on a Seder scene by the painter Daniel Oppenheimer from ca. 1867.
