At Rjukan, in fact, the world's largest hydropower plant was built twice! Firstly along with the construction of the Vemork power plant (1911) and then, four years later, with the construction of the Såheim power plant. The foundations had been laid when Hydro built the Svelgfoss power plant at Notodden. It was completed in 1907 and was the largest in Europe at the time.
