    FOR FIRST PUBLICATION TUESDAY'S EVENINGS, May 6th, ENGLAND'S OILFIELD NOW PRODUCES IN MILLIONS 3.5.1947 Since 1939 England's only big-scale oilfield has produced more than ten million gallons of oil, and the wells are now yielding better than 150 tons a day. The field stretches for 100 square miles beneath the "Dukeries" the name by which that area of the English Midlands is known where so many of the premier peers have their stately homes and family seats. This photograph was taken at EAKRING, Nottinghamshire, where about 450 men are employed by the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. Oil is reached at about 2,000 feet. The typical British oil-man - LOFTY SANDERS, wearing protective headgear, holding the drill-bit which bits through the rock and earth to reach the oil layer 2,000 feet below the ground.
