Fondazione Musei Senesi
Siena, Italy

This precious 16th-century’s panel by the Nordic-style artist Andrea Piccinnelli, known as “il Brescianino” was originally found in the Chapel of Bibbiano. Permeated by Raphael-esque elements, the painting also shows Leonardo-esque echoes in its shadings, and is striking in its chromatic juxtapositions, the luministic effects on the silky blond hair of the Baptist and the Virgin and the fullness of the forms.
