This tobacco tray seems to be common tobacco tray, but in fact, it is a karakuri (trick) box. It is possible to take another tray out by pushing its side and use it as a desk (cf. the picture below). The decoration of the tray is really splendid. Besides the inlaid cranes, are peonies and butterflies depicted in maki-e. The wings of some butterflies are skillfully expressed by metal.
