This neck pouch was also used for carrying tobacco items. People wore it under kimono (traditional Japanese costume) so as not to loose their belongings. The two bags of the pouch were put in each sleeve (tamoto) of kimono. Since kimono had no pockets, people used sleeves for carrying small items.
