Table

Carlo Carlieri; Giuseppe Speluzziaround 1810

Museo Poldi Pezzoli

Museo Poldi Pezzoli
Milano, Italy

The table top has a refined inlaid pattern of semi-precious stones representing branched coral, shells and pearls. It is a typical example of the work of the famous Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, which began to produce decorative objects using shells and marine motifs as early as the mid-eighteenth century. This example was probably made to a design by Carlo Carlieri, active between 1781 and 1822.
The columnar support of the top, made of ebony with heavy bronze decoration chased and gilded, is by Giuseppe Speluzzi.
