Table support (trapezophoros) with two gryphos tearing apart a dear - unknown 325-300 BC, marble, 95 cm high, 148 cm long. Table Support (Trapezophoros), a sculpture in painted marble comprising the figures of two griffins –
imaginary animals with the body of a lion and the head of a dragon – in the act of attacking a female deer. This fourth-century BC piece on
display in the foyer of the Auditorium was highly appreciated for its
symbolic value.The Table Support was returned to Italy by the Carabinieri’s special
investigation squad, the Comando Tutela Patrimonio Culturale which had
after being stoled by dealers linked to the illegal excavations carried out
at Ascoli Satriano (near Foggia) in the 1970s.
