This Alsatian painter lived in Paris from about 1622 to 1639. This work gives a good impression of a neglected genre: an impressive still life is presented on choice
table linen against a dark background. The composition is dominated by the rectangular basket with sparkling glasses. Three wine bottles are placed with it; the olive-coloured, lead-glazed earthenware with a cord handle, reminiscent of a pilgrim’s bottle, is particularly splendid. A silver tea-caddy and a little cup, decorated with Chinese plant arabesques, are placed on the uncovered table edge in the interests of a balanced colour scheme. Despite its painterly refinement the picture has a certain graphic hardness, as can also be seen in works by Georges de La Tour. Stoskopff was a crucial figure in the development of still-life painting in Paris from 1620 onwards.| Prestel Museum Guides - Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2017
