Powers-Samas Tabulator and Summary Card Punch. James Powers (of Powers-Samas) constructed the first successful printing tabulator in 1913; he believed a machine capable of printing out results on paper was essential. The earliest tabulators were only capable of printing figures but demand prompted the development of alphabetical units.
