Josef Szombathy, the head of the anthropologic-prehistoric collection of the Imperial Natural History Museum in Vienna, made exact notices whenever he visited the excavation in Willendorf. On August 7th, 1908, he drew a sketch of the position of the figurine as it was found into his diary. The Venus of Willendorf was unearthed 25 cm below the uppermost layer of the site in a horizon containing just a few stone tools.
