This is one of several paintings from a fragmentary copy of the Shahnama (Book of Kings), the epic that tells the story of the pre-Islamic kings and heroes of Iran. The manuscript was probably produced for the Iranian ruler Shah Abbas the Great, sometime after his accession in 1587.
