The title of this painting is borrowed from a 1974 song by the rhythm and blues duo Ashford and Simpson. Unlike many of his portraits that present the subject frontally on a stark, monochromatic background, in this work Hendricks has created a detailed setting. The young woman lies languidly on a sofa, gazing toward the floor, her face partially obscured by the drooping leaves of a houseplant. This painting presents an intimate environment, where the semi-nude subject is accessorized with a colorful head wrap, a feather boa, multi-colored striped socks, and ballet slippers, as well as a selection of high-heeled shoes on the floor. Hendricks demonstrates both his engagement with women’s fashion and feminine sensibility, as well as a formal interest in color, pattern, and texture.
