This picture scroll has been handed down in the Tachibana family of the Yanagawa domain. It tells the story of a real boy named Ino Heitaro in the mid Edo period (18th century). Heitaro had fearlessly confronted ghosts and monsters over the course of one month. This story had been widely introduced in various ways to the public and known by the name of “Ino Mononoke Roku”.
The picture scroll of the Tachibana family consists of three volumes, all of which were painted in the late Edo period. It describes Heitaro’s experience vividly. The ghosts and monsters, which appeared at his house almost every night, were all terrifying, but there is something charming about them.
