Views of the Hudson River from Yonkers are spectacular, and many wealthy New Yorkers took advantage of the picturesque location so close to Manhattan. John Williamson painted this scene, just north of Glenview, from the estate of tobacco merchant Christian Lilienthal. At the right side of the canvas are Duncraggan, home of Yonkers carpet manufacturer William Cochran, and further uphill Greystone. When John Trevor was building Glenview, Greystone belonged to Samuel Tilden, who had just been defeated by Rutherford B. Hayes in the disputed 1876 presidential campaign. In 1899, it was purchased by Samuel Untermyer.
