The central marble bas-relief of the Monument, visible along the Duomo's far north nave, depicts the Vrigin with Child, work of Pompeo Marchesi (1835), which replaced a previous sculpture erected in 1480 by Francesco Sforza in honour of the faithful mercenary Captain Alessio della Tarchetta. The statues at the sides represent Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Apostle and are the work of the sculptor Monti di Ravenna. In the centre, an inscription recalls the feats of the leader and pays homage to some elevated qualities, such as faith and modesty.
