This woollen tartan day coat and skirt was made for Diana, Princess of Wales for an official visit to Italy in 1985. It was designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel, the husband and wife team, who had designed her iconic wedding dress four years earlier.
The boxy shape with exaggerated shoulders and large collar was a fashionable look at the time. As Diana refined her image in her first years of public life, she learnt from both the good and bad reviews of her outfits. While the design of this outfit was criticised by some, it shows how Diana enjoyed wearing a wide range of styles. She teamed the outfit with a simple white camisole, a string of pearls and a large teal hat.
