Hawksbill turtles are currently classified as “Critically Endangered” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The greatest threat to hawksbill sea turtle was the harvesting for their beautiful and unique shell. In Brazil, the common name “tartaruga-de-pente” refers to the indirect overexploitation (to make jewelry, eyeglass frames and other decorative items).
