Taurobolium

Taurobolium is a work from Irons (Hierros), the first series Pablo Serrano developed following his return to Spain. To create this piece he became completely immersed in informalist abstraction. Finished in 1958, Taurobolium was created by assembling large metal plates and loose cut-outs with a curved profile which were soldered together to form a composition developed in different planes. Through this work, Serrano presents a focus and reflection on space, a concept which characterizes the discourse of his first few series. Taurobolium together with Space constitutes one of the most relevant works in Serrano's career, having been selected by Frank O'Hara to participate in the major exhibition New Spanish Painting and Sculpture held in the MoMA in 1960 as a travelling exhibition, which later toured various museums across the United States.
