An estimated 20 million American Bison lived in the Great Plains. As white settlers moved in the animals were hunted in increasing numbers. In 1872 along more than 43,000 hides and nearly 1.5 million pounds of meat were shipped out of Dodge City, Kansas. The large herds were reduced to a minimal existence.
