SAITŌ Kiyoshi first gained recognition for his talent as an artist outside of Japan. As such, his work was widely exhibited in the United States and other parts of the world, and these experiences gave him insight into how Japan was viewed from abroad. The Japanese teahouse in this particular piece is painted in an abstract style similar to that of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, with features reduced to horizontal and vertical lines.
