With dramatic Art Nouveau styling, French designer Paul Follot transformed the form of the tea and coffee service into a thoroughly modern creation at the turn of the twentieth century. This lyrically organic design is reflected through the dynamic lines of the vessels' handles and bodies, with gently fluted elements vaguely echoing images of the natural world such as fish fins and plant fossils. Executed only in silverplated metal, an example of this coffee and tea service was showcased at the first annual salon of the Société des Artistes Decorateurs in 1904.

Follot's talents extended beyond holloware, as he also designed successful lines of furniture, fabrics, wallpaper, carpets and ceramics.
