The Turkish Sultan presented Miss Barton this set of teaspoons for her relief service after the Turkish Armenian conflict in 1896. For four months, Miss Barton's role during the Turkish-Armenian Relief Effort was one of great diplomacy. Considering her position as a foreigner, an American woman, responsible for organizing the safe passage of her field workers and coordinating with the authorities of the Turkish Army, Kurdish irregulars, Armenian villagers, Christians and Muslims, this was a remarkable achievement.
