On its maiden voyage in 1912, the passenger ship Titanic collided with an iceberg and sank, despite several ice warnings. Of the more than 2,200 people on board, 1,514 died in what was one of the worst maritime disasters of all time. Nearby ships were called for help by radio-telegraphy. This telegram to the passenger ship Baltic confirmed the sinking of the Titanic with the text: "41 46 N 50 14 W Sinking wants immediate assistance (243 off Pos)."
