Ownership of the estate at Temple Newsham can be dated back to the 11th century. In 1622 it was sold to Sir Arthur Ingram, the family were later created Viscounts Irwin. Between 1710 and 1715, the grounds were redesigned by William Etty of York. In 1762, the ninth Viscount employed Lancelot 'Capability' Brown to redesign the landscape, although these were never fully implemented.
In 1922 the house and estate were sold to the City of Leeds. The park continues to be open to the public and the house is used as a museum and art gallery.
