Terrapin Park on Opening Day of the Federal League

Panoramic photograph depicting the Opening Day baseball game at Baltimore’s Terrapin Park, with the Baltimore Terrapins and the Buffalo Buffeds meeting for the first major league contest in the history of the short-lived Federal League. Taken from inside the grandstand at the third base line, the view provides an unusual perspective with the roof supports elegantly decorated with American flags and bunting, and spectators nearest the field in the foreground, framing the game in progress on the field. The overflowing seats in the opposite side of the grandstand are visible at the right with the bleacher seats and a row of residences with rooftop spectators at the left.

Excerpt from the coverage of the game in Sporting Life, April 18, 1914: "The Third League Starts. The initial championship contest of the new major league played under brilliant auspices before a record-breaking Baltimore crowd. Buffalo at Baltimore, April 13 - The first championship game of the Federal League as a major [league] organization was played this day between Baltimore and Buffalo. ... 27,692 persons had paid, and enough had gotten in on passes to make the total 30,000, filled every place except the diamond in Terrapin Park. It was the biggest crowd that ever gathered at a Baltimore ball game and it was also the most enthusiastic."
