Los Angeles, United States

Los Angeles-based designer Rudi Gernreich (1922-85) travelled to a number of exotic locales in 1969. The panels that make up this caftan, likely acquired during his time in Gujarat, India, utilize traditional Indian textile techniques such as shisha (mirror work) and multiple brightly colored embroidery stitches. The body-obscuring garment appealed to Gernreich’s interest in liberating people from constraining silhouettes and promoting a unisex lifestyle.
