Thatched cabins in a deep ravine

Nukina KaiokuDated 1842

Sakai City Museum
Sakai-shi, Osaka, Japan

Created in April when Kaioku was 65 years of age. A narrow path meanders through the mountain, eventually opening a wide view of the lake. In the middle of the scroll, in the hut among the pine trees is seen a hermit. On the end of the scroll is written horizontally a poem about the efficacy of pines; it had been believed since ancient times that taking pine leaves would bring longevity.
