Antiproton production takes place in the AD target area. Protons with an energy of 26 GeV hit a metal target (a cylinder 3 mm diameter, 55 mm long) made of Iridium. Each collision produces new particles, among them 1 antiproton per 250,000 collisions. The antiprotons come out of the block at diverging angles and are focused using magnetic fields before they reach the AD. Only a fraction of them have the right energy to be injected into and stored in the AD.
