Andrea Schiavone (schiavone means “Slav”, indicating the painter’s origins) was a leading exponent of Mannerism in Veneto, and this Adoration of the Magi is an excellent example of Mannerist painting, which appears in the repeated presence of the figura serpentinata – figures in a spiral pose. The work dates from about the mid-fifteenth century and is striking for its dynamism and for the style which recalls that of Parmigianino, from whom Schiavone took inspiration.
