The Adoration of the Magi was a popular theme throughout the Renaissance. The rich colors, intricate patterns and heavy use of gold are elements of the International Gothic Style that remained popular longer in Siena. In Vanni's image the two foreshortened horses on the left are examples of early experiments with perspective, a fascination which would become a preoccupation for fifteenth-century artists.
