Published in the same year as Dürer's 'Marienleben', the woodcut 'The Adoration of the Magi' was repeatedly associated with the episode. It is, however, an independent devotional image.
Maria and Joseph welcome the three wise men from the Orient under the canopy of a house, which gives a ruinous impression due to the incompletely covered roof and cracks in the walls.
The viewer looks sideways into the architecture through two support beams. Mary sits in front of the front door and holds the baby Jesus on her lap. He playfully and curiously reaches into a box that the kneeling king offers to him. While Joseph and another king watch the action, the third guest turns to his entourage. The star that led the Kings to Christ is still shining above the scenery.
