The painter, here at the top of his career, represents the iconographic theme related in Matthew’s Gospel, arranging the characters on two diagonals intersecting in the centere. The oblique setting is stressed by the chromatic contrasts of Venetian tradition between the Virgin and the moor king, both dressed in blue, and between the king’s golden clothes, in the foreground, and St. Joseph’s ones.
