The Anastasius platter from the ship burial at Sutton Hoo

British Museum

British Museum
London, United Kingdom

After its discovery, this large silver platter became known as the Anastasius platter after the Roman emperor Anastasius I (AD 491-518), whose control stamps are on the back. These stamps, similar to modern hallmarks, were applied by official Byzantine manufacturers. The date of these stamps tell us that the platter was already up to 100 years old when it was buried at Sutton Hoo.
