Emile Bernard often drew on religious imagery for inspiration in his work. This print depicts the Archangel Gabriel kneeling and holding out a lily to the Virgin Mary, against a backdrop of arcades. The phrase that appears under the image, Et le verbe s’est fait chair et a habite parmi nous (And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us), is a meditation from the Gospel of John. Bernard also made several paintings depicting the Annunciation.
