This image from an extremely low perspective is almost certainly a study for a ceiling painting. However, it has not yet been linked to a specific work. The drawing is particularly elegant and airy. It achieves an extremely painterly effect through the use of the blue paper (carta azzurra) and the passages of ink wash and white highlights, which have been executed with the brush.
The artist has achieved the intensity of expression and the charged tension between the figures by reducing his material to its essentials. Architectonic elements, such as the coffered ceiling, the portal in the background, and the tent-shaped baldachin strengthen and emphasize the clarity of composition.
