The panel once was the outside wing of the Passion altarpiece in a Cologne Carthusian monastery. The altarpiece was donated in 1464 by the Rinck family of Cologne, whose coat of arms can be seen bottom right. The figures are in a vaulted room whose depth is indicated by the perspective view of the tiled floor while the townscape is fictional.
