The Apotheosis of Hercules

François Lemoyne wanted to rival the decorative work of Charles Le Brun in the Hall of Mirrors. He used a rejected project of Le Brun when the central subject of the Hall of Mirrors was to be the Apotheosis of Hercules. Several months after completing the work, the painter committed suicide by stabbing himself with a knife.
