A commercial sample book of Bayer's company, which originally manufacturered synthetic dyes. The success of the German Jewish chemist Carl Liebermann (1842-1914) and his associate Carl Gräbe (1841-1927) to synthesize the alizarin molecule in 1868 led to the widespread production of synthetic red dyes.
