Michael is dressed as the ‘Captain of the Lord’s Host’. An inscription on the reverse side of the icon reveals that it was used by the Tsarina, Maria Fyodorovna (1847-1928), to bless her son, the Grand Duke Michael (brother of the last Tsar) at his baptism.
