The Arctic Ocean, heart of our planet's climate system

Some experts predict the total disappearance of pack ice in summer. Such a disappearance will have serious consequences. The ice pack reflects more than 80% of incident solar energy. When the ice disappears, in its place the Ocean absorbs almost all the energy received. Result: a considerable excess of heat enters the global climate system.
