The artist and writer Wassily Kandinsky, although born in Russia, spent much of his life in Germany and is one of the foremost artists associated with German Expressionism. This exposition of his theories of aesthetics and his defence of abstract art was first published in England in 1914, having appeared in German four years previously, under the title "Uber das Geistige in der Kunst".
