Description: Born into a wealthy family headed by artist, entrepreneur, and art collector Henri Stanislas Rouart, Ernest Rouart grew up in an environment where artistic experimentation was encouraged. So it seemed fitting when in May of 1900 he married Julie Manet, another Impressionist scion. Armed with no formal training besides what they absorbed from observing their parents and their circle, Manet and Rouart often went on sketching trips in the French countryside. On one such trip around 1903, Rouart studied his wife as she sketched the scenery around her. Rouart’s resulting pastel sketch, created with a soft tenderness that belies his adoration of her, provides an intimate look into this couple’s relationship. The sketch also connects both artist and subject with their parents and grandparents who were so integral in the Impressionist movement.
